SEN in the Early Years
"The SENCo – notably, also the school’s mental health lead - is ‘outstanding’ and ‘a fantastic addition’" ~ GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE 2023
A holistic approach to learning
At The Children's House, we place a strong emphasis on supporting every child from their earliest years. We believe that early identification and intervention are key to unlocking each child's full potential. Our SENCo, Laura, who is also our More Able and Mental Health Lead, plays a crucial role in coordinating individualised learning interventions. In these roles, she ensures that all children, from their earliest days in our care, receive the support and challenges they need, while prioritising their overall wellbeing.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we offer targeted interventions to help children develop essential skills in areas like communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development. These early interventions are collaborative, involving close communication between teachers, parents, and external professionals when needed, to ensure that support is consistent both at school and at home. By setting individualised targets that are reviewed termly, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to make steady progress, whether they need a short-term boost or more sustained support.
Our approach to identifying and nurturing More Able students also begins in the early years. Our staff are trained to recognise exceptional potential in academic subjects, sports, or the arts, and to provide additional challenge and enrichment opportunities from the start. This ensures that all children have the chance to excel in areas of strength. For More Able pupils, individualised targets are set, and they are supported with tailored tasks that stretch their abilities. We also teach them valuable meta-cognitive strategies, helping them become aware of their strengths and how to harness them for future success.
By focusing on early intervention and personalised learning from the beginning, we ensure that every child at The Children's House is given the best possible start on their educational journey.
