Prep School

Homework

Homework is given regularly at the Prep School.  It is based on what has been taught in class and helps children to reinforce their learning, particularly in reading.

All children take home a book every night to read to parents. They are also given a weekly spelling list to learn.

In Year 1, children are given a list of weekly homework tasks. Each week, they will receive a list of spellings, one piece of maths, and one piece of topic or literacy work. All homework tasks will include an optional challenge to extend their learning. Homework is sent out on Friday and is due the following Friday. Children are also expected to read daily for at least 15 minutes and guardians record the reads in the child’s reading diary. Maths is reinforced online via Numbots, which children can access at home using their individual login.

In Year 2, children are given two pieces of homework each week, to be completed over several days. This usually includes one piece of Numeracy alongside either a research task, a writing activity, or a practical task. Weekly spellings are also provided and should ideally be practised by the children each evening. Spellings can be completed using the online platform Spelling Frame or on paper using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method. Maths skills are reinforced online through Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars, which children can access at home using their individual login.

In Year 3, children are expected to read each night at home. There will be weekly written English and maths homework. On Mondays, children will take home a comprehension or grammar activity which is due on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the children will take home a mental arithmetic task which is due on Friday. In addition to this, nightly spelling and times tables practise is expected during the week to prepare for weekly tests. This term the children will also be set homework on atom learning, which may include short verbal or non-verbal reasoning questions. Occasionally there may also be weekend topic-based research assignments.

In Year 4, children are expected to read at home each night and complete their Reading Record commenting on their own reading. In addition to our weekly schedule of spellings, English and maths homework, children will be asked to complete topic assignments and individualised homework from time to time.

In year 5, children are expected to read every night and record new vocabulary and a brief summary of any poignant parts from the story in their reading records. At the start of the week, they will be assigned homework on Atom Learning. On Atom, they will complete English, maths and verbal/ non-verbal reasoning tasks which they can complete throughout the week. From time to time, they will also be assigned a small project linked to their curriculum theme. Spellings are assigned on 'SpellingFrame' at the start of the week and tested at the start of the following week.
