FAQs - Buildings & Renovations

Q: Who’s involved in contracting the work?

A: Like any building project, we are gathering quotes and a working group including staff and governors, who will make the final decision on contractors.  All contractors will be fully insured members of regulated bodies.

Q: When will you start the works and when will it finish?

A: Contractors have already been in to begin pricing up the works and outlining the schedule which will be shared in due soon. We’ve set up staff working groups to help ensure both the new site and KHW will be extraordinary spaces for our children.

Q: Will work be done when the children are on site?

A: No – there’s no need as we can renovate the new site, then move in Prep pupils, We will then complete works at King Henry's Walk and then move the Early Years pupils across. All will be completed before the classes move.

Q: Are we keeping Elmore Street?

A:  No, Elmore Street has been sold to a faith-based charity to be used for non-educational purposes.

We’re thrilled to be moving the Prep school to a site with significantly enhanced facilities which will mean that KHW can become a specialised EY site.  However, our departure date from Elmore Street is relatively flexible, allowing us to completely finish works at KHW and the new site before we move the school across.

Q: Will the school be merging with another school group?

A: No, we intend to retain our independence and grow the charity ourselves with the invaluable help and expertise of the Council of Management.

Q: There will be three halls across both sites, what will they be used for?

A: Having three halls will transform the school! We will be able to use them for dance, drama, gymnastics, clubs, concerts, lunches etc. We will have flexibility around visits and workshops and are thrilled that we will be able to offer more to pupils.

Q: What work needs to be done at KHW?

A: Some reconfiguration and redecoration will be completed and the pods from the existing Y1 and 2 classrooms will be removed to create large early years classrooms. We plan to make some additions to the playground.

Q: What happens if you can’t finish the works on time?

A: Although we would like to have both sites ready for the start of Spring Term 2027, our departure date from Elmore Street is flexible.

We will ensure that teaching and learning will not be disrupted by any building works.  Having undergone several building and renovation projects in recent years we have confidence in our contractors and the timeframes that they set.

Q: Is drop off and pick up easy – I know there are LTNs blocking roads there?

A: You will need to investigate your specific route and the LTNs in place.

King Henry’s Walk is easily accessible by car, bike and foot and new larger pavements have been laid to ensure the safety of children.

The new site also has direct access via a quiet side road from the Balls Pond Road or via a pedestrian-only/bike bridge from St Judes Road. We will have more space for secure bike and scooter parking.

Q: What will you do with all the “spare” classrooms?

A: We haven’t decided how to allocate these yet but look forward to having more space for specialist subjects, interventions and meetings.

Q: Will the school continue to use the church building at KHW?

A: Yes, we will continue leasing the hall and upstairs classrooms from the church, who use the income to provide crucial support for the local community.

Q: How will you manage the actual moves? Will children lose teaching time? Will there be a series of days when the school is closed while you move classrooms?

A: Any moving will happen during school downtime – and will be completed using professional movers with no teaching time lost. More will follow on the timings as we progress through to the summer holidays.

Q: Sustainability – building and ongoing?

A: The new site is a modern architect-designed building which has modern insulation and glazing. It even has air-conditioning for very hot days.
